What Is Stained Glass Jelly?
Also known as Mosaic Jello or Broken Glass Jelly, this dessert combines vibrant cubes of flavored jelly suspended in a silky, sweetened gelatin-milk base. It’s a whimsical, eye-catching dessert that’s easy to make and endlessly customizable with your favorite jelly colors and flavors.
Ingredients
For the Flavored Jellies:
-
1 box (3 oz / 85g) greengage jelly (or lime)
-
1 box (3 oz / 85g) orange jelly
-
1 box (3 oz / 85g) strawberry jelly
-
3 cups boiling water (1 cup per jelly flavor)
Feel free to substitute with raspberry, blue raspberry, lemon, blackcurrant, or any jelly you love.
For the Milk Gelatin Base:
-
3 envelopes unflavored gelatin (e.g., Knox or Halal gelatin)
-
2 cups boiling water
-
1 can (14 oz / 396g) sweetened condensed milk
Equipment Needed
-
3 medium mixing bowls (one for each jelly flavor)
-
1 large Bundt pan or silicone mold
-
Mixing whisk or spoon
-
Non-stick cooking spray
-
Measuring cup
-
Sharp knife
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Flavored Jellies
-
In 3 separate bowls, pour each jelly packet (greengage, orange, and strawberry) into its own bowl.
-
Add 1 cup of boiling water to each bowl and stir until completely dissolved (about 2 minutes).
-
Spray 3 small containers or pans lightly with non-stick spray.
-
Pour each jelly flavor into its own container and refrigerate until fully set, about 2–3 hours.
Step 2: Cut and Arrange the Jelly Cubes
-
Once the jellies are set, use a sharp knife to cut each flavor into small cubes (around 1-inch squares).
-
Lightly spray a Bundt pan or decorative mold with non-stick spray.
-
Gently mix the jelly cubes together and place them randomly in the mold, distributing colors evenly.
For a layered look, you can alternate pouring jelly cubes with milk gelatin layers.
Step 3: Prepare the Milk Gelatin Mixture
-
In a separate bowl, sprinkle 3 packets of unflavored gelatin over 2 cups boiling water. Stir until fully dissolved.
-
Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature—about 10–15 minutes.
-
Stir in the entire can of condensed milk and whisk to combine thoroughly.
⚠️ Do not pour hot liquid over the jelly cubes—it could melt them!
Step 4: Pour and Set
-
Pour the milk gelatin mixture gently over the jelly cubes in the Bundt pan—just enough to cover the jelly or fill the pan.
-
Tap the pan lightly on the counter to remove air bubbles and settle the mixture.
-
Refrigerate the mold for 2–3 hours minimum, or until fully set and firm to the touch.
Step 5: Unmold and Serve
-
To unmold, gently loosen the sides of the jelly from the pan using a butter knife.
-
Place a serving plate upside down over the mold, then invert the mold onto the plate. If needed, briefly dip the bottom of the mold in warm water to help release it.
-
Slice and serve cold!
Perfect for Eid, birthdays, family gatherings, or just a fun weekend project with kids!
