Rustic Savory Meat Pie

A golden, flaky pie filled with seasoned ground meat, sautéed onions, and sweet peppers—wrapped in a homemade dough that’s tender and buttery. Perfect for hearty dinners, holidays, and make-ahead meals!


Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 500 ml water

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 900 g all-purpose flour

  • 200 g melted butter

For the Filling:

  • 3 medium onions, finely chopped

  • 400 g ground meat (beef, pork, or a mix)

  • 1 sweet pepper (Balcarce or bell pepper), finely chopped

  • 1 medium tomato, chopped

  • Salt & spices to taste:

    • Black pepper

    • Paprika

    • Cumin

    • Optional: chili flakes for heat

Other:

  • 27 cm baking mold or pie dish

  • Extra melted butter or egg wash (1 egg + 1 tbsp milk)


‍ Instructions

✅ Step 1: Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine water and salt.

  2. Gradually add in the flour, mixing until a dough forms.

  3. Pour in melted butter and knead until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

  4. Cover and let rest for 20–30 minutes.


✅ Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and sauté the onions in a bit of oil or butter until soft.

  2. Add the ground meat and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces.

  3. Stir in chopped pepper and tomato. Cook until softened (about 5–7 minutes).

  4. Season with salt, pepper, and your choice of spices.

  5. Let filling cool to room temperature.

✅ Step 3: Assemble the Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Divide dough into two portions, one slightly larger for the base.

  3. Roll out the larger piece and line the mold, covering the bottom and sides.

  4. Spoon the cooled filling over the dough base.

  5. Roll out the top piece and cover the pie, pinching edges to seal.

  6. Cut small slits or poke holes with a fork for steam to escape.

  7. Brush the top with egg wash or melted butter.


✅ Step 4: Bake

  • Bake in the center of the oven for 35–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.

  • Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing to help set the filling.
