Italian Meatloaf with Parmesan Cheese Gratin
Ingredients:
500g ground beef
500g Italian sausage meat
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 egg
50g breadcrumbs
50g grated Parmesan cheese (plus more for gratin)
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 tbsp dried basil
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
Salt and pepper to taste
200g shredded mozzarella cheese
400g tomato sauce (homemade or store-bought)
Olive oil
Instructions:
• Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
• In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, sausage meat, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, oregano, basil, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well until smooth.
• Lightly oil a loaf pan or baking dish. Place the meat mixture in the bowl and shape it into a meatloaf.
• Pour the tomato sauce over the meatloaf, spreading it evenly.
• Top with the grated mozzarella cheese and sprinkle with a little extra Parmesan cheese for a richer layer of gratin.
• Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for about 15 more minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
• Let the meatloaf rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
