Gourmet Meatballs in a Rich Mushroom Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • For the gravy:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and egg until well combined.
  • Form the mixture into meatballs.
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and add mushrooms and onion. Cook until softened.
  • Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions, stir to combine, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Gradually add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  • Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through.
  • Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
