Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for flavor)

  • ¾ cup milk (whole or 2%)

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil)

For Coating:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar (or powdered sugar)

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)


Instructions:

1. Heat the oil

  • Pour 2–3 inches of oil into a deep saucepan or pot.

  • Heat to 350°F (175°C) over medium heat. Use a thermometer for accuracy.

2. Mix the dry ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.

3. Mix the wet ingredients

  • In another bowl, whisk milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.

4. Combine and form dough

  • Add wet mixture into dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.

  • Dough should be soft but not runny (slightly sticky is fine).

5. Fry the donut holes

  • Using a small cookie scoop or two spoons, carefully drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough into hot oil.

  • Fry in batches, 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through.

6. Drain

  • Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel–lined plate to absorb excess oil.

7. Coat in sugar

  • While still warm, roll donut holes in granulated sugar, cinnamon sugar, or powdered sugar until evenly coated.
