Creamy Banana & Avocado Smoothie with Almonds

This smoothie is packed with healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins, making it a great option for breakfast, a snack, or even a light meal. The almonds add a delightful crunch and extra protein.

Yields: 1 large serving or 2 small servings Prep time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana: Frozen banana is highly recommended for a thicker, colder smoothie without needing ice, but a fresh ripe banana works too.
  • 1/2 medium avocado: Choose a ripe avocado that yields slightly to gentle pressure.
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) milk of choice:
    • Dairy: Whole milk for creaminess, or low-fat/skim milk.
    • Non-dairy: Almond milk (unsweetened recommended to control sweetness), soy milk, oat milk, or coconut milk beverage work well.
  • 1/4 cup (about 30g) raw almonds: You’ll use some for blending and some for garnish.
  • 1-2 tablespoons (15-30ml) plain Greek yogurt (optional, for extra creaminess and protein):
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or other sweetener (optional, to taste): Adjust based on the sweetness of your banana and your preference.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional): Enhances the flavor.
  • Pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg (optional): For a warm, spiced note.
  • Ice cubes (optional): If using fresh banana and you prefer a colder, thicker smoothie.

Equipment:

  • Blender (high-speed recommended for best results)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Drinking glass

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Almonds:
    • Set aside about 1-2 tablespoons of whole almonds for garnish.
    • For the smoothie, you can either:
      • Add the remaining almonds directly to the blender with other ingredients for a slightly nutty texture.
      • (Optional, for a smoother finish) Roughly chop the almonds before adding them to the blender.
  2. Combine Ingredients in Blender:
    • If using a frozen banana, break it into smaller pieces if necessary.
    • Add the banana, avocado (scooped out of its skin), 1/4 cup of almonds (or more, depending on your preference), milk, Greek yogurt (if using), sweetener (if using), vanilla extract (if using), and any spices (if using) to your blender.
  3. Blend until Smooth:
    • Start blending on a low speed and gradually increase to high.
    • Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, with no visible chunks of banana, avocado, or almonds. This may take 1-2 minutes, depending on your blender.
    • Tip: If the smoothie is too thick, add a little more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, add a few ice cubes or a little more frozen banana/avocado.
  4. Taste and Adjust:
    • Pour a small amount into a spoon and taste.
    • Adjust sweetness if needed by adding more honey/maple syrup.
    • If you want more of a nutty flavor, you can add a few more almonds and blend again briefly.
  5. Pour and Garnish:
    • Pour the smoothie into your preferred drinking glass.
    • Garnish with the reserved whole almonds on top.
  6. Serve Immediately:
    • Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh.

Tips & Variations:

  • Protein Boost: Add a scoop of your favorite vanilla or unflavored protein powder for an extra protein kick.
  • Greens Power-Up: A handful of spinach or kale can be blended in. It won’t significantly alter the taste but will add extra nutrients.
  • Nut Butter Boost: For an even richer, nuttier flavor and extra healthy fats, add 1-2 tablespoons of almond butter or cashew butter.
  • Chocolatey Twist: Add 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolate-avocado smoothie.
  • Seed Power: Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds or flax seeds for extra fiber and omega-3s. These will also help thicken the smoothie if left to sit for a few minutes.
  • Spice it Up: A dash of cardamom can also pair beautifully with banana and almond.
  • Storage: While best consumed fresh, any leftover smoothie can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. It may thicken slightly and separate, so stir or re-blend briefly before drinking.
