Amish Hamburger Steak Bake Recipe

A comforting, hearty family dinner with tender hamburger patties simmered in a rich, savory gravy. Perfect over mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a true comfort food classic.


 Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 large egg

  • ¼ cup milk

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp dried thyme

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste


‍ Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven

  • Set oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  • In a large bowl, combine beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.

  • Mix gently until just combined.

  • Form into 4–5 oval patties.

3. Sear the Patties

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  • Sear patties 2–3 minutes per side until browned.

  • Transfer to a 9×13-inch baking dish.

4. Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.

  • Stir in flour; cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.

  • Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth.

  • Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.

  • Simmer 3–4 minutes until thickened.

5. Bake

  • Pour gravy over patties in the baking dish.

  • Cover with foil and bake 30–35 minutes, until cooked through and tender.

6. Serve

  • Spoon extra gravy over each steak.
