Avocado Banana Smoothie

Avocado Banana Smoothie

Yields: 1 large serving Prep time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana, sliced and frozen (freezing the banana is key for a thick, cold smoothie)
  • 1/2 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy, almond, oat, or your preferred milk)
  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla for extra protein and creaminess, optional)
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup (optional, adjust to taste based on the ripeness of your banana)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for flavor)
  • 3-4 ice cubes (optional, use if your banana isn’t frozen or you want it thicker/colder)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Ingredients:
    • Ensure your banana is frozen for the best texture.
    • Scoop the avocado flesh out of the peel.
  2. Combine:
    • Place the milk, Greek yogurt (if using), honey/maple syrup (if using), and vanilla extract (if using) into your blender jar first. Adding the liquids first helps the blender blades move.
    • Add the frozen banana slices, the avocado, and the ice cubes (if using).
  3. Blend:
    • Secure the lid and start blending on a low speed, then gradually increase to high speed.
    • Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides with a spatula if necessary to ensure all the chunks are incorporated. This may take 30 seconds to a minute, depending on your blender.
  4. Check Consistency:
    • If the smoothie is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk at a time and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.
    • If the smoothie is too thin, add a few more slices of frozen banana or a couple more ice cubes and blend again.
  5. Serve:
    • Pour the smoothie into a tall glass and serve immediately.

Tips and Variations

  • For Extra Nutrition: Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, flax seeds, or a scoop of protein powder.
  • Add Greens: Toss in 1/2 cup of fresh spinach for an extra boost; the flavor is easily masked by the banana and avocado.
  • Boost the Flavor: A dash of cinnamon or nutmeg can add a nice warmth.
  • Sweetness Control: The riper your banana, the sweeter the smoothie will be. Taste it before adding any extra sweetener.
